COVID-19 has impacted the way in which health and care professionals communicate.  Several resources focusing on compassionate and effective communication skills have been added to the Learning Hub.  These resources support difficult conversations remotely with relatives and within a clinical setting both with patients and in relaying key transfer information to other colleagues.

The resources shared are relevant to health and care professionals, clinicians, specifically those working with an intensive care unit setting and clinicians caring for older adults experiencing delirium.

Communication tips for clinicians caring for older adults experiencing delirium during the COVID-19 pandemic  A paper providing tips for clinicians in non-verbal and verbal communication.

Communication skills – CUSS A short video focusing on the use of graded assertiveness to communicate concerns in a busy environment such as intensive care.

Communication skills – SBAR A short video detailing the use of the Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation (SBAR) communication tool to structure a transfer of information in a clinical setting.

Breaking unwanted news A set of materials and films to support staff through difficult conversations arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Learning Hub is a digital platform that provides easy access to a wide range of education and training resources for the health and care workforce. Organisations and users can contribute and share resources to widen audiences to across health and care.

It only takes a few minutes to contribute a resource to the Learning Hub. You can sign into the Learning Hub either using an e-Learning for Healthcare username and password or NHS OpenAthens user account details or by creating an account on the Learning Hub and using those details. Select “Contribute a new resource” and populate the form with details including the resource title, type, description and author details.
