Learning Hub – Providing the solution for hosting COVID-19 self-swab instructional video

The Learning Hub is a digital platform that provides easy access to a wide range of education and training resources for the health and care workforce.  Organisations and users can contribute and share resources for those in health and care to access.

Colleagues across health and care have been uploading resources.  There are now over 750 resources available for the health and care workforce to access and share with colleagues.

Asymptomatic COVID-19 testing is now available to all patient-facing healthcare staff.  Health Education England’s Technology Enhanced Learning team worked with the NHS Test and Trace team to produce an instructional film providing step-by-step instructions on self-administering a Lateral Flow COVID-19 test.

The instructional film is hosted on the Learning Hub and supported by written instructions.  To date the film has been viewed over 275,000 times.

The NHS Test and Trace team needed the film and written instructions to be widely available for the healthcare workforce to be able to access without the need to register or sign in to view them.  Using the Learning Hub as the single point of access to the resources assures version control and enables the resources to be updated as and when amendments need to be made, in case of changes to guidance, for example.  A link can be added to access the resources on the Learning Hub from any other system – and many NHS Trusts have done that using their intranets – to make access as easy as possible for their staff.

A key requirement for the hosting of the self-swab film was to enable reliable access for the huge numbers of the healthcare workforce in a relatively short timeframe.  The Learning Hub provides that requirement because it uses the latest technology and is independently scalable meaning it can cope with huge numbers of users accessing content at the same time with no impact on the users’ experience.

Due to the Learning Hub’s agile approach to development it meant the team was able to design, develop, test and release the self-swab page to meet the incredibly tight deadline.  The film was published onto the Learning Hub’s newly created page within 24-hours of the edits being completed.

You can sign into the Learning Hub either using your existing e-Learning for Healthcare username and password or NHS OpenAthens user account details or by creating an account on the Learning Hub and using those details.
